3802094 - VL316 "Sales area is not defined" when adding an item directly on an Outbound Delivery in S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.

Symptom

When adding a line item directly on an Outbound Delivery, the following error occurs and the item cannot be saved:

Sales area <Sales Org> <Distribution Channel> <Division> is not defined (Message No.: VL316)

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open the Create Outbound Delivery – Without Order Reference app.
  2. Enter the required initial data (Shipping Point, Sales Area, etc.) and continue.
  3. In the Outbound Delivery, add a line item directly.
  4. Save the Outbound Delivery.
  5. → Error VL316 is raised for the sales area being checked.

Cause

The Customer / Business Partner is not extended to the sales area used by the Outbound Delivery.

The system checks against a sales area that is not defined for the customer, which triggers the error.

Resolution

  1. Open the Maintain Business Partner app.
  2. Click Enter and double click on the business partner ABC (ABC being an example).
  3. In the field "Display in BP Role", select "Customer".
  4. Click "Sales an Distribution" & "Sales Area".
  5. Create the required sales area (use "With Reference" to copy from an existing sales area).
  6. Maintain the required tabs (Orders / Shipping / Billing).
  7. Save and reprocess the Outbound Delivery.

Result: the error message does not display anymore.

Alternative: Create the delivery using data that resolves to a defined sales area — i.e., a distribution channel and division combination already maintained in both the customer and material master.
