3802459 - Error 'You can configure a maximum of 40 controls per form version' when configuring a form - SAP Service Cloud Version 2

Symptom

  • The error message "You can configure a maximum of 40 controls per form version" is displayed when saving or activating a form version.
  • The error may be unexpected, as the total number of controls on the form does not appear to exceed any obvious limit.
  • The error is not triggered by the total number of controls in the form version, but specifically by the number of controls that have at least one property condition (hidden rule, read-only rule, or required rule) configured.

Environment

  • SAP Service Cloud Version 2 1.0
  • SAP Sales Cloud Version 2 1.0
  • SAP Enterprise Service Manager

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Navigate to the form designer and open a form version.
  2. Configure property conditions (hidden, read-only, or required rules) on form controls by selecting the gear icon next to the respective flag on each control.
  3. Ensure the total number of controls with at least one property condition exceeds 40 (including sections, which count as form controls).
  4. Attempt to save or activate the form version.
  5. The system displays the error: "You can configure a maximum of 40 controls per form version".

Cause

  • The system enforces a maximum of 40 form controls with at least one property condition per form version.
  • This limit applies to controls on which any combination of hidden, read-only, or required rules have been configured — not to the total number of controls present in the form.
  • Sections are treated as form controls and count toward this limit.
  • This threshold was increased from 20 to 40 in a recent release.

Resolution

  • The error is working as designed. The limit of 40 form controls with property conditions per form version is a system constraint.
  • To resolve the error, reduce the number of controls with configured property conditions to 40 or fewer per form version.
  • Note the following:
    1. What counts as a control toward the limit: Any form control — including sections — that has at least one property condition configured (hidden rule, read-only rule, or required rule) counts as one control against the maximum of 40.
    2. Where property conditions are configured: Property conditions are set by selecting the gear icon next to the hidden, read-only, or required flag on a form control.
    3. Multiple conditions on one control: A control with more than one property condition (for example, both a hidden rule and a required rule) still counts as a single control against the limit of 40.
    4. Sections: A section on the form constitutes a form control and is included in the count if it has at least one property condition configured.
    5. Recommended action: Review all form controls and sections with property conditions and consolidate or remove conditions where possible to bring the total to 40 or fewer.
