3803454 - Error: "The system could not complete reference object matching because the backend system returned error messages when retrieving the available reference object items"

When I open a draft invoice in edit mode and navigate to the Invoice Items tab, the Available Reference Object Items section is empty and I cannot assign purchase order items to my invoice line items. The following error message is displayed:

The system could not complete reference object matching because the backend system returned error messages when retrieving the available reference object items. Assign invoice items to available reference object items manually.

I have confirmed that the Enhanced Invoice Item Matching feature is active in my system and that the purchase order is not blocked by another invoice.
