3803816 - ISC Flow and Event-Based IC job order are not deterministic

Symptom

Multiple Intelligent Services Center (ISC) flows are configured on the same event (for instance "Employee Central: Employee Hire"), each containing Integration Center (IC) jobs set to run "When event is published".
A deterministic execution order is required so that integrations in the first flow always run before those in subsequent flows

Environment

  • SAP SuccessFactors Platform
    • SAP SuccessFactors Intelligent Services Center (ISC)
    • SAP SuccessFactors Integration Center (IC)

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Configure multiple ISC flows for the same event and add several integrations per flow with timing set to "When event is published".
  2. Perform one or more events.
  3. Review Integration Center’s Execution Manager timestamps for the initiated jobs and observe that the runtime order can vary between events and does not align reliably to the order shown in the UI.
  4. If multiple activities exist within a single flow, observe that their start order is also not guaranteed.

Cause

ISC events and IC job starts are asynchronous and governed by the job scheduler. IC jobs start independently when an ISC event is raised; sequencing varies based on when ISC receives the event and the time ISC takes to start each IC job. Therefore, a fixed execution order aligned with the UI is not guaranteed.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior due to events being asynchronous in nature. The start order of IC jobs initiated from ISC (including multiple activities within one flow) is not deterministic and may differ for each raised event.

Best practices and recommendations from our Dev Team:

  1. Reduce concurrency: Do not configure multiple IC jobs for the same event. Preferably limit to no more than two jobs; ideally use a single job to avoid performance issues and potential data loss.
  2. Redesign dependencies: Where order matters, consolidate logic to fewer jobs or adjust design so that jobs do not rely on each other’s immediate results.
