Symptom
- Unable to post a supplier invoice dated in a closed MM period after the period was closed in the Close Periods app (MMPV).
- The invoice references a Purchase Order and a Service Entry Sheet (three-way match: PO–SES–Invoice), which blocks posting until the required MM period is open.
- The Allow Posting to Previous Period flag does not cover the required earlier month.
- Posting period validation shows the invoice date is not in the allowed list (for example, only the current period and a special period are allowed).
Environment
- Product: SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
- Fiori UI for Invoice Verification (Public Cloud)
Reproducing the Issue
- Open Create Supplier Invoice or Supplier Invoice Advanced.
- Enter a supplier invoice with relevant date referencing a PO and Service Entry Sheet (three-way match).
- Attempt to post the invoice and observe that the invoice date is not within the allowed posting periods.
- Enable Allow Posting to Previous Period and retry; observe it only allows posting back to the immediately previous period and not to the period of the Invoice date.
Cause
- The inventory (materials) period in Public Cloud can move only forward; only the current and immediately previous periods remain open. Earlier periods cannot be reopened.
- The accounting period for an invoice is determined by the posting date, not the supplier’s invoice date, so for example, an April-dated invoice cannot post into April when April is closed.
- Invoice date and posting date are designed to differ: the invoice date drives payment terms and tax, while the posting date determines the accounting period.
- Inventory period control differs from accounting period control; accounting periods may be reopened by authorized finance users, inventory periods cannot.
Resolution
- Check whether an invoice already exists for the referenced PO (including automatically created documents). If found, do not create a duplicate; process against the existing invoice.
- Verify the goods/service receipt is posted in an open month and that accounting posting periods are open for vendor postings in the current month.
- Create the invoice keeping the supplier’s invoice date and set the posting date to a date in an open month (preferably the current month); then post.
- Record an internal note explaining that the original month was closed and the posting date differs from the invoice date for audit traceability.
- If an earlier payment exists (for example, a down payment), clear it against the newly posted invoice.
- If cost recognition is required in the closed month, have an authorized finance user reopen the accounting period and post an accrual in that month; then post the supplier invoice in an open month and reverse the accrual to avoid double-counting.
