3805401 - Search Results Show Users with Matching Middle Name Ranked Above Users with Matching First Name

Symptom

When performing a user search in SAP SuccessFactors, users whose middle name matches the search term appear higher in the search results than users whose first name matches the same term.

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors HCM Core

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Log in to SAP SuccessFactors
  2. Navigate to the Search bar or People Search feature.
  3. Enter a common first name as the search term (e.g., "Michael").
  4. Observe the order of results returned.
  5. Note that one or more users whose middle name matches the search term appear above users whose first name matches the search term.

Cause

  • This behavior is not caused by middle name carrying a higher search weight. It is weighted the same as first name and last name
  • The users appearing at the top likely have the searched name present in one or more additional searchable fields (e.g., alternative name, nickname, or email) — not just as their middle name. A record that matches the search term across multiple fields will accumulate a higher relevance score than one that matches on a single field, which explains why it ranks above a pure first-name match.

Resolution

This is expected system behavior. The search ranking is working as designed — results are ordered by cumulative relevance score across all searchable fields.
