Symptom
You receive the error message "Invalid file: The argument 'Z' cannot be interpreted as a number" when uploading BAI bank statement files from Fifth Third Bank via the Manage Incoming Payment Files app. The bank file import fails completely, and no bank transaction data can be imported into the system.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Reproducing the Issue
- Open the Manage Incoming Payment Files app.
- Upload a bank statement file in BAI format.
- Start the import and observe the error: "Invalid file: The argument 'Z' cannot be interpreted as a number".
Cause
The bank provides bank statement files with BAI version 3 format, while the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition system only supports BAI1 and BAI2 formats natively. The unrecognized version parameter in the file triggers the numeric interpretation error.
Resolution
- Contact your bank to request official bank statement files generated in BAI2 format instead of BAI3 format for subsequent daily reconciliation.
- For immediate emergency processing of pending bank transactions, manually modify the bank statement file. Change the last digit from 3 to 2 in the first 01 line of the file header, then re-upload the modified file to the system. The modified file can be imported and processed normally.
