Symptom
- Trial Balance closing balance for a GL account linked to foreign currency bank accounts (e.g., USD) does not match the House Bank balance converted at the confirmed period-end exchange rate.
- Bank reconciliation in transaction currency is correct — book balance equals bank balance.
- Exchange rate has been validated. Discrepancy is not caused by open items.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Reproducing the Issue
- Run the Trial Balance at the period-end close for the bank G/L account.
- Compare the Trial Balance closing cash balance with the corresponding House Bank balance.
- Validate the period-end exchange rate and confirm translation logic appears correct.
- Observe a variance between the Trial Balance closing balance and the House Bank balance despite correct translation and no open-item impact.
Cause
Foreign Currency Valuation (FCV) was not executed as part of the period-end close.
The Trial Balance closing balance is the sum of GL postings in local currency, each converted at the historical exchange rate on the posting date. The House Bank comparison uses the current period-end rate. The difference is the unrealized FX gain or loss that FCV would have posted.
Resolution
Scenario 1 — Period is still open
- Open Manage Exchange Rates app— confirm the period-end rate is maintained for the relevant currency pair.
- Open Schedule General Ledger Jobs (F3648) → select Advanced Foreign Currency Valuation.
- Set Valuation Key Date to the last day of the period.
- Run Test Run to verify, then execute Update Run.
- Re-run Trial Balance — closing balance now matches the House Bank balance.
Scenario 2 — Period is closed
Option A: Special Posting Period
- Open Manage Accounting Periods (F2293) — verify special period 13 is open.
- Post a manual journal via Post General Journal Entries:
- Document date: last day of closed period
- Posting date: period 13 / same fiscal year
- Dr GL bank account | Cr FX Unrealized Gain/Loss — local currency discrepancy amount
Note: Advanced FCV does not capture special period postings. See KBA 3730171.
Option B: Post in next open period
- Run Advanced Foreign Currency Valuation with the key date in the next open period, or post a manual journal with document date = last day of closed period, posting date = first available date in next period.
- Closed-period Trial Balance remains unchanged; going-forward balance is corrected.
Prevention: Include Advanced Foreign Currency Valuation in the month-end closing checklist and execute it before closing the posting period.
