3807808 - Error "BOM can only be extended via Master Recipe" when creating Alternative BOM in Create Material BOM app (SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition)

Unable to create Alternative BOM in the Create Material BOM app for a production BOM due to error "BOM can only be extended via Master Recipe" (Message No. 29357).  

• SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
• Bills of Material

1. Open the Create Material BOM app.
2. Enter material, plant, and set BOM usage to 1 (Production).
3. Set Alternative BOM to 2.
4. Press Enter and observe the error: "BOM can only be extended via Master Recipe" (Message No. 29357).

When a Material BOM has been created with a Master Recipe ( Create Master Recipe , Manage Master Recipes apps) alternatives cannot be extended via the Create Material BOM app ( CS01 )

In the app Manage Master Recipes you can see that the material BOM assigned to the Master Recipe ( Materials Tab -  BOM Button - Header )

The error 'BOM can only be extended via Master Recipe' is only raised in the App Create Material BOM ( CS01 ) 

If you wish to maintain a new alternative for the Material BOM the 3 options available are :

1. Use the apps Maintain Bill of Material / Maintain Bill of Material V2 app to create the new alternative.

2. use the Manage Master Recipes app.

3. Archive and physcially delete the BOM involved using the archiving object CS_BOM and recreate again in Create Bill of Material ( CS01 )
