3810026 - Returns order fails to copy items containing batch split from invoice

When creating a returns order of type CBAR with reference to an invoice of type F2 that contains batch split items, the following errors occur for free-of-charge items (item category TANN):

• Item category for item & cannot be determined
• Item & is not copied from the reference document

The same copy between F2 and CBAR using TANN item category works without errors when no batch split is present.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

1. Open the Create Sales Order – VA01 app.
2. Enter Order Type = CBAR.
3. Choose Create with Reference and select Billing Document as the reference type.
4. Enter an F2 billing document that contains batch-split items and select Copy.
5. Observe the errors.

The F2 billing document was generated using the Flexible Billing of Batch Items feature, which creates a batch main item (qty = 0) and a batch subitem (carrying actual qty/value) for each batch-split product. The batch subitems with item category TANN (free-of-charge) are a billing-level construct. When the system attempts to copy them to a returns order, item category determination fails because TANN batch subitems from a billing document are outside the supported scope for returns copy control. 

Note: the existing copy control entry (F2 -> CBAR for TANN) is valid but only covers regular TANN items, not TANN items that are batch subitems in a billing document. 

It's comprehensible how the possibility of copying free-of-charge batch subitems from billing document to a returns order would be of great use for business, so consider creating a feature request for this business requirement. This will inform the responsible product management team as to what additional functionality should be considered for future releases.
