3818953 - What is the difference between an Error and a Warning in my import file?

Symptom

Errors

Definition:
An error signals a critical problem with data in a specific record that stops the system from importing, creating, or updating that record.

Effect:

  • The entire record is not created or updated in the system.
  • None of the data from that record will appear in your records.

Example:
If an employee import file is missing a required field like Employee ID or provides an invalid Login ID, an error will occur and that employee will not be created or updated.

Warnings

Definition:
A warning highlights a less serious issue—one or more fields in the record have a problem, but it’s not enough to stop the entire record from being processed.

Effect:

  • The record itself is created or updated in the system.
  • Only the field(s) related to the warning are ignored or left blank.

Example:
If an employee’s report approver is invalid, you’ll receive a warning, but the employee record will still be created or updated (just without the report approver).
