3823678 - What is the difference between REPLACE and UPDATE in record 100 (Import Settings)?

Symptom

I want to know the difference between UPDATE and REPLACE record handling in employee import settings and how it works?

We have imported the record types 305 and 350, and we noticed that some of the data from the user profile has been deleted. We have used REPLACE in the import record 100. Could that be the reason?
