3824096 - Why am I getting Error 500 while saving a profile in User Administration (Invalid List Item)?

Symptom

I am trying to update or modify a user profile in User Administration, but when I click "Save" I receive the following message:
Sorry, something went wrong. The server encountered an error and could not complete your request. If you continue to experience problems, please contact your Company Administrator or Help Desk. (Error 500)
