3830508 - Error "A system error occurred" when saving business rule assignment in Assign Rules to Talent – SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals

Symptom

  • When assigning a business rule to a performance form template in Assign Rules to Talent, saving the assignment returns: "A system error occurred. Try again later. If this issue persists, please contact Technical Support for assistance."
  • In some cases, existing rules on the same template display: "Rule Definition Error: One or more parameters in this rule refer to an unavailable or inactive object, and some of the fields don’t exist anymore or have a type mismatch. The errors are highlighted in the list of parameters and in the rule details."

Environment

  • Product: SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals
  • Admin Center
  • Role-Based Permissions (RBP)
  • Performance Management – Assign Rules to Talent

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to Admin Center > Assign Rules to Talent.
  2. Select the affected performance form template.
  3. Navigate to Form Opening > Rule and select the intended business rule.
  4. Save the assignment.
  5. Observe the error message: "A system error occurred. Try again later. If this issue persists, please contact Technical Support for assistance."

Cause

The performance form template was renamed after rules were created. Existing rule assignments still reference the previous template name and/or obsolete objects, leading to "Rule Definition Error" and blocking new rule assignment saves.

Resolution

  1. Revert the performance form template to the original name used when the rules were created.
  2. Review existing rule assignments for this template and address any "Rule Definition Error":
  3. a - Update the rule so that all parameters reference available and active objects/fields, or
b - Delete the assignment for rules that are no longer valid.
  4. Save the changes and confirm no rule definition errors remain for the template.
  5. If the template must be renamed, perform the rename only after correcting/removing the problematic rule assignments.
  6. Create or update the required business rules against the current template name as needed.
  7. Reassign and save the business rules for the template and confirm the save completes without errors.
  8. Important note from product guidance: Avoid renaming templates for which rules exist. If you must edit a rule or its assignments after a rename, first revert the template to its original name.
