3830738 - Equipment PRT Remains Available for Production Order Release After Maintenance Cycle Is Reached (SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition)

Symptom

  • After a performance-based maintenance plan generates a maintenance order for an equipment PRT and that order remains open, the PRT availability check in production does not consider the open maintenance order. The production order can still be released without any warning or error.
  • The customer expects that once the maintenance threshold is reached and a maintenance order is generated, the equipment PRT should be flagged as unavailable — preventing production order release until maintenance is completed.

Environment

  • Product: SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Create equipment and maintain it as a Production Resource/Tool (PRT) with a measuring point counter for usage.
  2. Create a performance-based single-cycle maintenance plan, assign the equipment and counter, and schedule the plan with a cycle (for example, every n units).
  3. Assign the equipment PRT to a routing operation and maintain a usage formula so planned PRT usage is calculated from order quantity.
  4. Create and confirm a production order so that actual PRT usage updates the counter and the maintenance plan generates a maintenance order when the threshold is reached.
  5. Keep the generated maintenance order open (not completed).
  6. Create another production order using the same routing/operation and the same equipment PRT.
  7. Run the PRT availability check and release the new production order; the system still shows the equipment PRT as available.

Cause

This behavior is not supported by standard functionality. The system does not automatically set an equipment PRT to unavailable for production based on an open/due preventive maintenance order.

Resolution

  1. Consider submitting a feature request to have equipment PRT availability blocked when a due/open preventive maintenance order exists.
  2. As a workaround, implement custom logic using the BAdI BD_MFGORDER_CHECK_BEFORE_SAVE to prevent saving/releasing a production order that references a PRT with an open maintenance order.
  3. In the BAdI implementation:
    1. Identify the equipment PRTs referenced by the order operations.
    2. Check for due or open maintenance orders for those PRTs and evaluate their status/phase.
    3. If a related maintenance order is not completed/closed, raise an error message to block saving/releasing the production order.
  4. Ensure production PRT checking control and release control are configured according to your process so that custom validation aligns with order release checks.
