3832453 - Additional clarification about I/O idle timeout behavior, streaming responses, and HTTP 504 in SAP API Management

Symptom

You receive an HTTP 504 Gateway Timeout after approximately 55 seconds when calling a backend through SAP API Management.

You want to understand:

  • Whether io.timeout.millis (default 55,000 ms) is a maximum total transaction timeout or an I/O idle timeout;
  • How the gateway handles large or streaming responses when the total transfer takes longer than 55 seconds;
  • What happens when there are idle gaps longer than 55 seconds between data chunks;
  • and what HTTP status code the gateway returns when no data can be read or written within the timeout window.
