3341096 - Home Page - Custom Cards - GIF or PNG as Thumbnail are not shown as previewed (moving or transparent background)

When importing a PNG with transparent background or a GIF under Manage Home Page ->Edit Organizational Updates -> Card -> Thumbnail, the card is not displayed on Homepage as on the card Preview (see screenshot below). The behavior

• • The GIFs used as thumbnails for custom cards are static pictures on Homepage, while on preview the GIF is shown playing;
  • The PNG used as thumbnails for custom cards have the transparent background replaced with a solid color not shown anymore on the home page properly. The GIF is not moving anymore like a GIF should do. It became a static picture with a black background only.

1. Login to the instance
2. Go to Organizational Updates session (Custom card session)
3. You might see your GIF image as static image of the first frame or your PNG with a solid background color (likely black) 

The GIF or PNG were not officially supported, though they were being reproduced due to how the Homepage was designed.

Along with 2305, we have performed optimizations to the page and that includes changes that remove the capability to have moving GIFs or transparent Backgrounds, changing then to static picture with no transparent background (changed to a solid color).

On some situations, we might still show the GIF or the images correctly, depending of sizes and data to be loaded, though we advise to not use any of the images as we will not provide a consistent behavior.

This was an enhancement to improve the end user customer experience with better performance on the homepage, specially when a lot of data was needed to be loaded.

The card preview feature on Manage Homepage shows GIF and PNG different as the same optimizations applied to Latest Homepage were not applied to the card preview

Both situations are expected behavior as Homepage cards do not support moving GIFs or transparent background PNGs.

A solution for this is to replace your current thumbnail to a image with no animation or transparent background, you will require to update your images.

SAP is considering an enhancement to apply same optimization to card preview feature in Manage Homepage in the future, but that is not yet on the roadmap.
