3702507 - Known Limitations and By-Design Behaviors of Calculation Features in SAP Analytics Cloud (Collective KBA)

Symptom

Users working with calculation features in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) may observe differences in behavior, unexpected restrictions, or functional gaps when building stories, tables, or custom calculations.

Environment

SAP Analytics Cloud

Cause

  • The behaviors described in this document are either known product limitations or are functioning as designed.
  • They reflect the current technical framework of SAC’s calculation engine, model architecture, or story rendering pipeline. 

Resolution

The following collective list outlines the known limitations and by-design behaviors related to calculations in SAP Analytics Cloud. These items help clarify what is currently supported and where functional constraints apply. This article is informational only—its purpose is to help users understand what the product does and does not support in its current form.

Please note: This document is not intended to request or propose workarounds. If a feature is required for business operations, user may submit an enhancement request through the standard SAP Influence channel. Known Limitations and By-Design Behaviors:

1. Totals Calculation in Calculated Measures.

Behavior: Totals are not calculated correctly in calculated measures. 

Related SAP Note: 2850354 - "Show Totals" on a calculated measure doesn't return the sum up of all the members of this measure in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

2. COMPOUND_KEY Dimension Not Supported for Time-Related Calculations.

MTD/YTD selections are not available when a COMPOUND_KEY dimension is used in a Restricted Measure. 

Behavior:

  • If a time dimension is a COMPOUND_KEY, SAC does not support MTD/YTD selections.
  • This results in an incorrect date format being sent to the backend, causing errors.

3. Exclude Option Not Supported for Input Controls in BW Models.

Issue: The "Exclude" option in Input Controls is not available for BW models.

  • This feature is not supported for BW queries, so the option is hidden.

4. Unable to fetch data due to duplicate measure bindings error.

Error occurs when using measure input controls with calculations in a widget filter.

Behavior: If a measure input control is used alongside calculations in a story, SAC may fail to fetch data due to duplicate measure bindings.

5. Structure dimension will not get listed for any calculations in Dimension dropdown - BW.

Structure dimensions (primary/secondary) in BW models do not appear in the dimension dropdown for calculations. 

  • While structure dimensions exist in BW models, they are not supported in SAC calculations.

6. Calculation Count exclude Null Exception.

Aggregation won't count "(Null)" dimension members, but it performs on selected measure in Aggregation dialog.

Behavior:

  • Selected operation (e.g., COUNT, Count Ex NULL) evaluates on the Measure values selected (count in this case).
  • If the selected Measure has any NULL values, they will not be included in the count.

7. Aggregation doesn't work on "Aggregation Dimensions" when creating calculation measure.

Aggregation Calculation works based on the dimensions and conditions selected in the Calculation Editor and in the Builder panel.

8. Constant Selection is not Overriding Story Filters.

When selecting the “Forecast” version in the Story filter and “Actual” in the input control, the restricted measure calculation will ignore or remove the page/story filters as constant selection is enabled.

9. Calculation Support (BW, BW/4HANA, S/4HANA Live Connections).

Calculated Dimensions are not supported for BW, BW/4HANA, and S/4HANA versions.

10. ISNULL on HANA Live NULL values doesn't work as expected.

11. ISNULL is not supported from BW and S/4HANA.

Behavior: The function "ISNULL" cannot be used in the formula as it is not supported by the system.

12. Input control with Custom Current Date does not apply to “Current Date” in Date Difference calculations.

Behavior: Page filter is created using Select By Range with Custom Current Date for dimension “Billing start Date”, if any changes applied on Custom Current Date, in table we can see it get applied on Billing Start Date dimension but same does not get applicable to Date difference calculation.  “Current Date” in Date difference calculation will consider the system date. This is expected behavior.

  • Date Difference calculations do not support Custom Current Date.

13. Formulas that include the operator <> cannot be created or executed when working with Live Models.

Behavior: The live data source used in the story (such as HANA, BW, or S/4HANA) does not support the <> operator in calculation logic. As a result, any formula using this operator will fail during validation or execution.

14. ID shown instead of Description for a measure-based Calculated Dimension in a chart.

Behavior: The "Few Cities" MBCD has "Use measure values as dimension members" selected so the dimension members represent the "Medal Count" measure value for the cities selected and the as such there is no difference between the MBCD's ID and Description which does not represent the ID of the City dimension, but the "Medal Count" for the particular city

  • This behavior is expected.

15. Convert To Measure on Live Connection to BW4HANA Query is disabled.

  • Not supported for BW / BW4HANA

16. Restricted Measure with Previous Year will not show data for Year after node expansion.

Behavior: The MDS uses the InA ParallelPeriod function, which returns values only for the currently selected drill state.
Because of this, once you drill down—for example, to Month level—the Quarter or Year values are not shown.

Using Previous Period instead of Previous Year provides an option to retrieve earlier period values at the drilled level.

  • This is expected behavior.

17. Data is not displayed under Year column when creating Difference From calculation in story.

Behavior: To get values for all levels, user needs to select the correct year / period for comparison and also need to select the option "Show values for all levels".

18. With calculated dimension in chart, InA responses 'A constraint of the dimension, which can't be aggregated, is violated'

Behavior: For Formula calculated dimensions using Account models, do not include the Account dimension in the underlying query.
Because the Account dimension is omitted, MDS detects that a non-aggregatable constraint is missing and returns the warning.

  • This behavior is expected and occurs by design.

19. Running Total (YTD) in Restricted Measures only supports yearly, quarterly, or monthly granularity.

The following error message occurs on charts when drilling down to half year in YTD calculations in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC):

  • "No data is available for the chart to render. Try changing your drill level, or contact your administrator."

The following behaviour occurs on tables when drilling down to half year in YTD calculations in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC):

  • No values are visible for the calculation for half-yearly data.

20. Restricted Measure with Constant Selection does not respond to Linked Analysis filters.

Behavior: When "Constant Selection" is enabled, restricted measure value will remain fixed for all members of the specified constant dimensions regardless of any filters (including filter applied through linked analysis) on these dimensions outside of those defined in Selection Context and this is "By Design".

  • This is expected behavior.

21. Date dimensions are not allowed in calculated dimension for Live HANA models having dimension type Date.

Behavior: Dimensions of type (valueType) Date are not listed in hint list in Calculated dimension for Hana Live Models.

22. Restricted Measure Calculation will be valid although Custom Current Date option with fiscal hierarchy in range dialog is invalid, due to changes of date settings in the model.

25. Single selection is not supported for version dimension when using Restricted Measures.

Behavior: When using Restricted Measures and when you select a version dimension, you will not see a single selection. This is because the display has been updated to show multiple selections in ODE. The previous behavior of excluding with a single selection is no longer supported in the new member selector.

  • This is expected behavior.

26. Tooltip for slider and number in text box could be different for large number of marks.

27. Multiple clicks are required when editing the free flow text in the calculation description in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC).

28. Sort on Running Total.

Behavior: The Running Total Calculation does not respect sorting order in SAC story.

29. Files/Folders selection in Story Conversion tab.

Behavior: Selected stories are cleared when navigating to different page for more selection. After the user performs any actions subsequent to their selections, the prior selections will no longer be visible. This behavior is also evident on the Folders page.

  • This is expected behavior.

30. Script Variables can not be used for dynamic description in Calculation.

31. Unable to edit the static text written after a dynamic text in calculation description.

Behavior: Multiple clicks are required when editing the free flow text in the calculation description in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC).

  • This is a by design behaviour.

32. Warning message in SAP BW when using static Calculation Input Control (CIC) in IF formula.

Behavior: In case of IF formula, BW checks for the operands compatibility and when they do not match it throws "Formula Calculated Measure 1 uses operands with incompatible dimensions" warning. When creating IF formula with static CIC, we do not pass the false condition instead we pass a constant function in INA query for query optimization. As we are not passing same arguments with same operand types, the incompatible dimension warning is thrown,

  • This is a by design behaviour.

33. Enable constant selection is not working as expected post QRC 2025.08 upgrade.

Behavior: The LOOKUP function (also used in YTD or other restricted measures or Cross calculation within SAC modeling) in SAP Analytics Cloud is used to select data with a specific filter independent of the query filter.

The result contains cells matching the query filter only and not those related to the LOOKUP function. If both filters do not overlap, no cells are shown at all.

34. Dynamic text does not update in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) after Model Update.

Behavior: Dynamic text used in the Calculation Description does not update based on Calculated Input Control or Formula input control values after any update or changes made to the underlying model.

Although the updated value is visible in the Calculation Input Control or Formula input control , the calculation description within the chart does not reflect the change.

35. SAP BW sign reverse are not inherited for Calculated Measures.

Behavior: If user create a calculated measure based on measures with their sign reversed, then the sign reverse will be ignored.

36. Automatic selection of the level attributes for the constant selection .

Behavior: When defining a restricted measure with time dimension and constant selection, some attributes are automatically added to the selection and cannot be removed or modified.

37. ResultLookup formula is supported only for Primary Structure calculations.

Behavior: Resultlookup will work from calculations created from measures and will not be supported in structure(Cross calculation) for a measure model. 

Resultlookup will work from calculations created from account dimension and will not be supported in measure calculation(Cross calculation) for a UAM model and measures act as cross calculations in UAM model. 

  • This is a by design behaviour.

38. Dimensions are not listed under hint list in Calculation edition for IF Formula in Calculated Measures in S/4HANA Tenant with embedded Analytics.

Behavior: For S4 the dimensions are not yet supported in CM functions including IF function. 

  • This is expected behaviour.

39. A cyclical dependency error appears in a widget when a calculation references an account or measure that has the same name as the model calculation.
